The 1990s were an influential period in American history, especially in terms of streetwear, rap and hip-hop culture. That was America, and at dkside we want to take a trip back in time:
Urban Fashion. 90s streetwear was characterized by everything from street style to sportswear to pop culture. Some iconic trends included:
- Oversized clothing: Loose clothing such as t-shirts, sweatshirts and pants were popular for both men and women.
- Wide-leg jeans: These were a staple in many people's wardrobes. They were often worn low on the hip.
- Sportswear: Sports brands such as Nike, Adidas and Puma became symbols of status and style.
Rap and Hip Hop.
The 90s were a golden era for rap and hip-hop. The genre consolidated and diversified during this time:
- Gangsta Rap: This subgenre was popularized by artists such as Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube and Tupac Shakur. The lyrics talked about life in the slums, violence and social struggles.
- Alternative Hip-Hop: In the late 90s, artists and groups emerged that explored more introspective and experimental themes, such as A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul and The Fugees.
- Crossover to the Mainstream: During this decade, rap and hip-hop began to gain a wider audience and become integrated into mainstream pop culture.
Culture and Media:
The 1990s also witnessed significant developments in the media:
-MTV. The music network MTV had a huge impact on the dissemination of hip-hop music and urban fashion. Shows like "Yo! MTV Raps" helped popularize the genre.
